January: Don't Hug Doug

Parents, Children, and Caregivers, the New Year is a great time for setting our personal intentions, it’s the perfect time to have a conversation on creating, enforcing, and respecting healthy boundaries.

A hug, high five, or a wave? What do you prefer?

Join us as we read, Don’t Hug Doug (He Doesn’t Like It) by Carrie Finison, a story about setting healthy boundaries for how we like to greet others and be greeted. A topic for both children and adults, this is a great read to initiate conversations around what each person’s comfort level is with physical space and interactions. After reading along with us, check out our activity to accompany the conversation!

ACTIVITY

January’s Activity is “Boundary Art” with Tape Resist Painting

You will need:

  • Paper
  • Paint and brushes
  • Painter’s tape

Gather the supplies and provide enough time and space for children to explore and discover the magic of tape resist painting in four easy steps.

  1. Create a design using tape (painter’s tape, preferably so it won’t rip the paper when you peel it off)
  2. Paint over the design
  3. Allow time to dry
  4. Slowly peel off tape to reveal the design

Please send us photos of your child at work and any thoughts they have around setting boundaries. Email us at eceresourcecenter@crystalstairs.org if you are comfortable with us sharing the imaginative painting you and your little ones created!

SONG

January’s First Friday Song is a revisit of that fits perfectly with our theme.

Check out: The Boundaries Song| Hopscotch

Children and adults can sing along with this very catchy social-emotional song about setting healthy boundaries with others.

Let’s make an environment where adults and children feel empowered and comfortable saying these words out loud if needed…

Please stop. I don’t like that. I’m feeling uncomfortable. I need more space.

Not around me. Don’t take it personally, it’s just a boundary. That’s a boundary.

THANK YOU! We’ll see you at the next First Fridays!
